The quick verdict
The Catalina 42 is an appealing choice for family cruisers, liveaboards and sailors who want respectable sailing performance without sacrificing accommodation space. Its strengths are its roomy interior, solid fiberglass hull and generally straightforward systems. Its compromises include limited handholds, some awkward galley arrangements and production-boat equipment choices.
